What is China Silk?

What-is-China-Silk
  • The cocoons of silkworms are used to produce the luxurious fabric known as China silk.
  • The cultivation of silkworms and the weaving of silk have long been traditions practiced by the Chinese people. Because of this, the age-old proverb states that "men labor on the farm while women participate in spinning and weaving."
  • When the silkworms are ready to spin their cocoons and leave for the bushes, place the cocoons in the water that is boiling and reel off the raw silk fibers.
  • After going through a number of processes, such as tentering of weft, jacquard weaving, knitting, and weaving, the china silk fabric is created.

History

History
  • Silk first developed in China about five to six thousand years ago, in the middle Neolithic Age.
  • Silk manufacturing in China increased steadily from the Warring States period until the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). Thin silk, open-work silk, and brocade were the silk industry's uses during the time.
  • The birth of brocade marks a watershed moment in silk history. Brocade mixes silk's superior powers with art, making silk not only the greatest of garment fabrics but also a work of art.
  • During the Han Dynasty, when economic and cultural relations between China and its neighbors were expanding, China's silk commerce and exports grew like never before, leading to the formation of the legendary Silk Road.
  • Under the twin shock of expensive internal taxes and various levies, along with silk dumping by foreign nations, silk output sank to a low ebb throughout the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties.
  • Silk manufacturing entered a new era with the establishment of New China, with China silk fabrics being distributed in over 100 countries.
