What is Acrylic Fabric?

  • Fabrics made of acrylic fiber are made by processing acrylonitrile, which is a synthetic polymer.
  • The production of this form of fiber involves the reaction of certain chemicals derived from petroleum or coal with a range of monomers. As a result, the acrylic fabric is a type of fiber that is derived from fossil fuels.
  • Acrylic material is sometimes referred to as "cheap wool."

History

  • In the late 1940s, the American DuPont Corporation began conducting experiments in the production of acrylic fibers, just as they did with all other types of synthetic textiles.
  • As quickly as it became popular, it was replaced by wool, which was cheaper and better for everyday use.
  • Despite the fact that, in the 1970s, assessments of the effect on the environment were carried out and concerns were voiced, the market for acrylic fabric continued to rapidly grow.
